True Detective returns to our screens tonight -- here's everything you need to know
truedetective truedetective
THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED second season of True Detective kicked off on HBO last night.
This season stars our own moustachioed Colin Farrell opposite Vince Vaughn, Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch, and it seems a whole load of people tuned into the premiere as it is trending in the United States.
But what’s it all about? Does this season live up to its predecessor? Is it worth watching?
Here’s what you need to know.
So, does this season have any connection to the last season?
Sorry, McConaugholics — this season has no connection to the last season save for the ratio of moustaches. All new story, all new city, all new cast.
Don’t worry, though — it’s still written by Nic Pizzolatto, who masterminded the first season. The first two episodes are directed by Justin Lin, best known for helming three of the Fast & Furious film, so you can probably expect car chases.
Okay, so what’s it about?

This season, we’ve left the swamps of New Orleans and moved on to Los Angeles.
Colin Farrell stars as Ray Velcoro, a detective in the fictionalised town of Vinci. Vince Vaughn, meanwhile, plays Frank Semyon, a white-collar criminal with a penchant for shady deals.
Rachel McAdams plays a troubled police officer and Taylor Kitsch plays a highway cop who discovers the body of the city manager, who has been brutally murdered.
This murder is at the centre of the series and soon all four find themselves tangled up in a web of murder, mystery and intrigue.

Sounds decent. Is it any use?

Critics have been cautious so far with many comparing the first few episodes of this new season unfavourably to the first season.
Variety called it “generally watchable” but stated that it lacks “the magic conjured by the original Matthew McConaughey-Woody Harrelson pairing”. Vanity Fair called it “compelling” and “admirable”.
The New York Times described it as “intriguing, just not enthralling” and stated that the writing is “tighter” meaning you shouldn’t expect any long-winded philosophical monologues this season.
Finally, Time Magazine was a little more damning, declaring that it looked to be “going nowhere interesting”. Ouch.
And Twitter?
Here’s a quick sample…

And what about our Colin?
Everyone’s impressed with the accent anyway.

It kicks off on Sky Atlantic tonight at 9pm.
Be there or be square.
One last thing — are you sure McConaughey isn’t in it?
We’re sure.
Sorry :(
